Byobuiwa (屏風岩)is an interesting rock formation in Soni Village. The kanji 屏風 means byoubu, or “folding screen,” and 岩 means iwa, large rock or boulder. It is 868m high and two kilometers wide. The cliffs you see are 200m high. About one hundred years ago, the villagers planted 300 yamazakura trees, or mountain cherry trees, so descendants could enjoy the scenery. The scenery of Byobuiwa and the trees can be enjoyed in a park at the base of the cliffs. The park is relatively flat and has convenient bathrooms.

Byobuiwa was declared a National Natural Monument in 1959.

Yamazakura are known to bloom slightly later than regular cherry blossoms; the peak time for viewing the yamazakura is usually the middle or end of April. During this time, there is also a light-up event and shuttle service provided by the villagers. (Due to high traffic during this time, personal vehicles are not allowed into the parking lots in the evening.) Outside of April, it is said that the fall foliage is Byobuiwa’s second most beautiful time.

There are two parking lots for Byobuiwa. The lower parking lot is a bus parking lot. It has a bathroom and it is about a 15-minute walk from the parking lot up to Byobuiwa’s park. The upper parking lot is next to Byobuiwa’s park; a bathroom is located next to the parking lot. Please note that the upper parking lot is along a mountainous road and is not recommended for larger vehicles.

Prepare Before You Go

If you plan to hike up to Byobuiwa, please take all the precautions you would take for any other hike. Let others know where you are going. Dress appropriately for the weather. Bring adequate food and water. Wear appropriate footwear.
