Gaze at the stars, forget about your everyday life
Lace up your boots and come on out to Yamazoe Village, where you can view dazzling stars that look like diamonds. Hike Mt. Kono (Konoyama) and see unique rock formations, Shinto shrines and Buddhist temples, and the Milky Way! Visit the Adventure Forest for high-ropes courses and zip-lines, even ride a Segway. Then relax at Eizanko with some locally-grown tea. The village contains good locations for outdoor enthusiasts and families; it’s the perfect place to unplug and reconnect with life.
Where to visit
- Mt. Kono or Konoyama is 618.8m high and a specified prefectural park, which is famous for its Rhododendrons and stargazing. Enjoy beautiful panoramic views from the observatory and good Japanese food at the restaurant.
Public transportation: From JR/Kintetsu Nara station, take the bus bound for 山添 (Yamazoe) and get off at 北野 (Kitano). Walk 2.4km to get to Konoyama.
By car: Get on Meihan Expressway and exit “神野口 (Konoguchi）”.
- Chokyuji Temple
- This ancient branch temple of Todaiji Kaidanin has 88 Jizos (guardian deity of travelers and children) placed by Chiryu-Shonin, who contributed to the rejuvenation of this temple. The gentle smile of each Jizo would relax the mind of those who see them.
By car: Get on Meihan Expressway and exit “山添 (Yamazoe）”. Drive about 13km to Konoyama.
