This ancient branch temple of Todaiji Kaidanin has 88 Jizo statues (guardian deity of travelers and children) installed by Chiryu-Shonin, who contributed to the rejuvenation of this temple. These jizos are known and worshipped as a miniature version of the Shikoku Pilgrimage*, which is traditionally done by visiting the specific 88 temples on the island of Shikoku.
When you walk up the hill, you see jizos here and there, many of which wear bibs around their necks. Those bibs are replaced with new ones once a year in autumn (Jizo Festival).
