Moss walk / 苔さんぽ

At Akame 48 Waterfalls, a moss sanctuary designated as one of Japan’s Precious Moss Forests, you’ll explore the fascinating world of moss with a magnifying glass in hand. After the walk, an instructor will guide you in creating your own kokedama (moss ball), moss terrarium, or moss bonsai. You can take your handmade creation home as a unique souvenir.

Schedule

Morning Session: Departs at 10:00 am / ends around 11:30 am
Afternoon Session: Departs at 1:30 pm / ends around 3:00 pm
Duration: Approx. 1.5 hours

Meeting Point: Akame Nature History Museum
Meeting Time: 10 minutes before the start

Program Flow: Akame Natural History Museum → Moss Walk in the Gorge (observation) → Kokedama-making → Return to Akame Natural History Museum

Price

Adults: From 4,500 yen
Children (elementary & junior high school students): From 4,000 yen

The fee includes:

  • Gorge conservation fee
  • Accident insurance
  • Rental loupe (small magnifying glass)
  • Kokedama kit (soil, moss, houseplant, decorative items, tray, and take-home bag)

Minimum participants: 2 / Maximum: 5

  • This tour is for participants only; visitors may not accompany or observe.
  • Preschool children (under school age) cannot join or observe.

Clothing

Please wear comfortable, season-appropriate clothes and shoes.

  • Some areas in the gorge can be slippery; sturdy shoes such as sneakers are recommended.

What to Bring

Clothes you don’t mind getting dirty, sneakers, backpack, towel, drinks

  • If you have your own loupe or magnifying glass, please bring it. Rental loupes are available for those who don’t have one.

Notes

  • The tour may be canceled even after booking is confirmed if the minimum number of participants is not met, or in case of severe weather or high water levels.
